Friends of Fred Thompson: Radio Ad

Radio Ad for Fred Thompson (1:00)

Huckabee for President Exploratory Committee: The negative ad that Huckabee has vowed never to air.

Bootlegs of the negative ad that will never be shown on television can be seen here (truncated :30 ad) and here (full :30 ad) thanks to Mark Halperin of ThePage.Time.com

Excerpt from Jonathan Martin's blog entry titled, "Huck's instant classic on Politico.com:

"Mike Huckabee's move to not run ads hitting back at Mitt Romney is a risky move that could rejuvenate his fading campaign — or ensure his defeat on Thursday.

That Huckabee still showed the spot to dozens of reporters jammed into a press conference will ensure the most skeptical, bordering on cynical, coverage on every national news broadcast tonight and in all the major national papers tomorrow. After it became clear that he was not going to air the ad on Iowa television, but would still preview it here, the press corps offered a collective laugh in plain recognition of what Huckabee was up to.

But what the snickering big feet here say tonight or write about tomorrow is not as important as how it will be described by the local journalists who were here."

The most interesting and important thing here is that thousands of people will see this attack ad and Huckabee hasn't had to spend a penny on an ad buy.

We've finally got a domain name...

So, the site is going to be down, starting on 12/29/07, for the next day or two while the DNS servers are updated. I'm going to keep posting in the meantime so that it will all be waiting for you here when the site is live again. See you in a couple of days.

By the way, the new domain is 30fpspolitics.com (no need for the blogspot part anymore.)

Cheers,

JRW

UPDATE (12/21/07): I've had some trouble getting the new domain attached to the blog. For now, when you go to www.30fpspolitics.com you'll be forwarded to 30fpspolitics.blogspot.com. It'll just have to remain this way for a few weeks until I can figure out how to work this magical internet thingy.

Huckabee for President Exploratory Committee: HuckChuckFacts

Video description: "Mike Huckabee and Chuck Norris review facts about Governor Huckabee"

Note: Another ad that reaches "infotainment" status. It may be very very funny, but its really just another political ad.

They formated this one to one minute so it could conceivably air on television. I doubt they will though. Most likely they don't have the money to air this one. Also, it may not be targeted enough for a general television release. In other words, the internet audience that will see this ad is most likely a little more sophisticated than the general television audience. The internet crowd is just more likely to get the joke.

I have to hand it to the Huckabee crowd for trying to capitalize on the extreme popularity of a pop culture icon like Chuck Norris.

SlateV.com: Damned Spot: Pre-Thanksgiving Edition

Video description: "With the Iowa Caucuses just six weeks away, campaign ads are flowing freely. Slate's John Dickerson decodes a fresh bactch of spots."

Note: This one is funny. John Dickerson does a great job at pointing out the cheap tricks that campaigns use in their ads to pull the strings of the viewers. This wonderful commentary really demonstrates that political advertising is no different than commercial advertising. The ads use the same types of elements to create a world within the ad and then they share that world with you, the viewer.

Hillary Clinton for President Exploratory Committee: Caucusing Is Easy

Video description: "Iowans for Hillary tells you everything you need to know to caucus for Hillary -- with a little help from some special guests."

Note: I'm breaking my rules by posting this video. I like to try to stick to ads that appear on television or radio. However, this video is creative enough to include here, because it really is an advertisement and it takes full advantage of the possibilities for advertising and messaging on the internet.

So, I think it is important to take a look at this video and recognize what they are attempting to accomplish. At face value, it appears that they have put together a nice informational video, with a entertaining feel, in order to talk about caucusing in Iowa. Its really a marketing tool finely disguised as "infotainment" to draw voters out to caucus for Hillary Clinton. In the end, this is a really good example of how campaigns can use very creative approaches to advertising and messaging. The ad shows how the internet can be used to advertise in ways that are impossible -because of monetary restriction- on cable or network television.

The internet (and YouTube specifically) is now giving advertisers a place to create longer, well produced messages with a greater ability to develop story lines at an overall lower cost.

Friends of Fred Thompson: Consistent Conservative (30 sec)

Video description: "Touting his 100 percent pro-life voting record and reminding voters that "our rights come from God and not from government," Senator Fred Thompson launches a pair of television ads set to begin airing on Wednesday statewide in Iowa and nationally on Fox News. This is the 30 second version"

Friends of Fred Thompson: Consistent Conservative (60 sec)

Video description: "Touting his 100 percent pro-life voting record and reminding voters that "our rights come from God and not from government," Senator Fred Thompson launches a pair of television ads set to begin airing on Wednesday statewide in Iowa and nationally on Fox News. This is the 60 second version."

Note: Well, Fred Thompson has finally cut a tv commercial. I saw one of these this morning while I was watching CNN. I really enjoyed these two ads. They have such a Hollywood produced feel to them. I have to admit that I laughed out loud at the end when the las graphic comes up and the announcer says" Fred Thompson, President." Good stuff.

Club for Growth PAC Releases Hard-Hitting Ad in OH-5

Text that appears on the Club for Growth PAC website along with the release of this new commercial:

Washington -- Today, the Club for Growth PAC released an ad in Ohio's fifth congressional district that sets the record straight about State Senator Bob Latta's tax-and-spend record and educates voters about Steve Buehrer's conservative economic principles. The large ad buy will run on both broadcast and cable stations throughout the district.

Both tax-and-spend Latta and conservative Buehrer were representatives in the Ohio House in 2003 when then-Governor Robert Taft proposed a budget containing the largest tax and spending increase in state history, but their records could not be more different. As the Club for Growth PAC ad points out, Buehrer opposed the Taft budget tooth and nail. Bob Latta voted to slap Ohio taxpayers with astronomically high sales and business taxes.

This ad is particularly important since Bob Latta has wasted no time in twisting the truth about his own record. "It is sad to see Bob Latta distort the facts in order to paint himself as a 'rock-solid conservative' when in fact, he supported record tax and spending increases," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "The Club for Growth PAC ad will inform voters of the truth about Bob Latta's record."

"Having a taxpayer hero like Steve Buehrer in the U.S. Congress is especially important in this day and age when most Washington politicians are spending taxpayer dollars like there is no tomorrow."
